Hiking Starter Kit

Hiking doesn't need to be expensive. But the right layers and practical kit will make you much more comfortable on the trail.

The thinking

Why these items

Layers are everything in hiking — temperatures change fast. Moisture-wicking base layers keep you dry, a mid layer traps warmth, and a windproof jacket blocks the elements. Breathable leggings or hiking trousers allow full leg movement over uneven terrain.

Beginner Tips

01

Start with a short, well-marked trail with a reliable weather forecast. AllTrails app rates routes by difficulty and shows reviews from other hikers.

02

Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back. Download the map offline before you leave signal range.

03

Pack more water than you think you need. A general rule is 500ml per hour of hiking.

04

Break in any new footwear on short walks before committing to a longer hike. Blisters on a mountain are a genuine problem.
